Basketball: 10 teams brace up for WABA championship in Sierra Leone

Ten teams are bracing up for the Western Area Basketball Association Regional Tournament. WABA released fixtures for the compettion on Tuesday.

The tournament which will start on the 29th of February will see Goderich Blazers take on Upwards.

Umar Kargbo, Regional Organizing Secretary of WABA told Politico on Tuesday that the players are excited about the prospect of starting a new season.

“We have been playing pre-season at Victoria Park and the National Stadium. Teams have started training and by now most of them know their strengths.”

The tournament will last until May this year.

Ten teams have been put in two groups of five. They will all play each other in each group. The best three teams will progress from each group.

The top two qualifiers will automatically qualify for the playoffs whiles the remaining four will play each other a one game knock out playoff qualifier.

The two winners of the knockout games will then join the top qualifiers in the playoffs, which is also like a semifinal.

All four semifinalists will play their opponents in a series of three matches. Each team will need to win two of the three games to qualify to the finals.

The finals which will likely be played in late April will be a series of five games.

Kargbo said to have a successful competition, they have budgeted Le 60 million for the duration of the tournament. But support is yet to come by, with the competition just ten days away from starting.

“For now, we are using our subscriptions that clubs pay to fund the competition. We have presented our budget to the national federation and they have assured us of funding,” he said.
