Fake US dollar bills in circulation in Sierra Leone - Police say

By Kemo Cham

The Sierra Leone Police (SLP) has warned of fake US Dollar in circulation across the country and called on the public to beware while transacting in the currency.

The police in a statement issued on Monday said they were investigating the development.

“In view of this, the SLP would like to advise everyone to exercise maximum precaution when transacting in United States' currency notes,” the police statement said.

The warning comes as the police busted what it suspects to be a syndicate that has been printing the fake notes.

Deputy Police Media and Communications head, Assistant Superintendent of Police Samuel Siao Conteh, told Politico that one person has been detained after a raid on a compound in the west end of Freetown where they found what looked like the work station of the suspects.

He said the police acted on a tip off that led to them, with the help of the CID and the military, to raid the house located at the 7 Battalion at Goderich, where they discovered the equipment used to print the fake note. He added that the police also discovered a cache of arms and ammunition.

The suspect, according to ASP Conhteh, is helping them in their investigation.

The Police is calling on the public to help provide information on anyone suspected of circulating the fake US Dollar note.

When contacted by Politico, a spokesman for the Bank of Sierra Leone declined to comment beyond the saying that they were considering the development.
