The head of the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) in Sierra Leone, Francis Ben Kaifala, has been appointed to serve as the new president of the Network of National Anti-Corruption Institutions in West Africa (NACIWA).
The appointment comes amidst significant gains that the anti-graft body has made in Sierra Leone’s fight against corruption.
The announcement was made during the General Assembly held in Lome, Togo early this week.
NACIWA was established in 2010 to promote coordination and cooperation among institutions to combat corruption within the West African region.
Some members of the network include Sierra Leone, Liberia, Niger, Senegal, Benin, Burkina Faso, Cote d’Ivoire, Nigeria, Togo. The association comprises heads of national anti-corruption institutions that have the obligation to fight corruption in the West Africa region.
“Commissioner Kaifala - who happens to be the youngest Commissioner on the Continent, will be the President of the regional Association and Chairman of the Executive Committee. He will be the face, voice and principal representative of the Association in ECOWAS and other Global bodies and shall lead in the attainment of the objectives of the Association as mandated by ECOWAS,” a statement from the ACC reads.
As part of his mandate, Kaifala will work closely with the Permanent Secretariat of NACIWA in Dakar, Senegal. He will preside over all Executive Committee Meetings and General Meetings for the next one year,”
