Players of the country’s national football team, Leone Stars, have taken leave of President Julius Maada Bio as they head for the African Cup of Nations tournament in Cameroon, their first in a quarter of a century.

The president told the players to make the country proud by lifting the trophy. He said Sierra Leone had been in the football wilderness for far too long and believed it was time they changed the narrative.

He said the game plan of football to that of the military entrusted with a mission to accomplish, and encouraged the players to make Sierra Leone proud.  He said he won’t be present in Cameroon but would be seriously following the games on television.

First Lady Madam Fatima Bio earlier in also addressing the footballers expressed how passionate she was about football and entreated the players to achieve success in the tournament.

Leone Stars are grouped with Ivory Coast, Algeria and Equatorial Guinea. Sierra Leone’s opening match is against Algeria on the Tuesday 11 January 2022.
