Health Minister calls for nationwide fight against Kush

Minister of Health and Sanitation, Dr. Austin Demby has called on all to come together to help in the fight against the deadly Kush drug, describing it as a public health issue.

Dr. Demby made this statement at a Town hall meeting on how to combat kush that took place at the Bintumani Conference Hall, Freetown on Tuesday 2nd April this year.

 He called on the public to treat the drug menace as an important issue, noting that the health sector alone cannot succeed in the fight. 

NGC Dep. Secretary resigns from SLPP Alliance

The Deputy Secretary-General of the National Grand Coalition (NGC) party, Alhaji K. Tarawally popularly called ‘Laj K’ has resigned from the Alliance signed with the ruling Sierra Leone Peoples Party (SLPP) in the run-up to the 2023 multi-tier elections in the country.

In a notice shared with Politico on the 2nd of April 2024, Tarawally noted that his resignation from the current SLPP-NGC Alliance “is not out of bitterness, but from a firm belief that we can and indeed must aspire to greater heights.”

Sierra Leone coup plotter begins 30-year sentence

Staff Sergeant Alhaji Koroma who was among 27 soldiers facing a court martial in connection with the 26 November 2023 attempted coup, is now serving a 30-year sentence after pleading guilty to nine out of 20 count charges levelled against him. The state dropped 11 other counts before the court martial proceeded to hand down the sentence on Monday 25 March 2024.

Sierra Leone parliament frowns at Sierra Rutile deal

Parliamentarians, who recently embarked on oversight visits to different mining companies across the country, have expressed their dissatisfaction over attempts by Marampa mining company to buy over Sierra Rutile Mines.

The Chairman of the Parliamentary Committee on Mines and Mineral Resources, Saa Emerson Lamina explained to the House on Tuesday 26 March 2024, that they were aware of the Chief Executive Officer of the Marampa Mines wanting to take over Sierra Rutile.

Guinea to extradite alleged Sierra Leonean coup plotter

A Government press release dated 25 March 2024 has stated that Abubakarr Boxx  Konteh is to be extradited to Sierra Leone for his alleged role in last year’s failed coup.

According to the release, a joint operation between the Guinean authorities and the Sierra Leone security apparatus apprehended Konteh at the Guinea airport in an attempt to flee to Senegal, after being in hiding since the failed coup.
