Sierra Leone reduces maternal deaths by 60% - says Health Minister

Minister of Health and Sanitation, Dr Austin Demby has confirmed the World Health Organization (WHO) rating of Sierra Leone as the best performer in the reduction of maternal mortality rate in Africa.  He stated this during a press conference at Youyi Building.

  He said the ministry is now working on a rethink of transformative health care in Sierra Leone which focuses on patient -care since everyone around the world now looks up to malaria, tuberculosis  and  vaccination programmes.

Sierra Leoneans want traffic police off the streets

In this year’s Citizens Manifesto, citizens have demanded that police are taken off the streets and replaced with street lights; citizens expect that the next administration tackles this to reduce the level of corruption.

A presentation on the 13th of April 2023 at the launch of the 2023 Citizens’ Manifesto by members of the steering committee from various districts stressed that police officers be taken off the street.  

Women take top positions at Sierra Leone opposition party conference

The National Unity and Reconciliation Party (NURP) also known as

“Cut Across” has held its National Delegates Conference, with women assuming key executive positions in the party.

The two-day event held at Negus Nagas Complex at Grafton outside Freetown saw youthful Christiana Gbondo endorsed as Secretary-General of the party. Long-serving Secretary-General Pastor Tamba Gbekie and another challenger decided to step down in favour of Christiana.  

EGTC allays fears over Bo Fire Incident

The Electricity Generation and Transmission Company (EGTC) has allayed the fears of residents in Bo that the fire incident at the Power Station has done no material damage to the existing power infrastructure.

This was made known through a press statement by EGTC on the 13th of April 2023 hours after the incident on the same day.

According to a report received by EGTC from the Head of the power station, the initial report stated the seriousness of the fire with huge flames billowing over the building.

Sierra Leone launches new policy against harmful alcohol use

The Ministry of Health and Sanitation (MoHS) in collaboration with the Sierra Leone Alcohol Policy Alliance (SLAPA) and Foundation for Rural and Urban Transformation (FoRUT) has vowed to reduce the harmful use of alcohol in the country.

The Ministry made this commitment during the launch of the National Alcohol Policy for Sierra Leone on the 12th of April 2023 at the Miatta Conference centre in Freetown.

NEW cites high turnout at voter ID centres

The National Elections Watch (NEW) in a press statement highlighting its monitoring of the distribution by the Electoral Commission of Sierra Leone (ECSL) of the new voter ID card across the country, has stated a high turn-out of people at centres to collect their cards.
