128 university students at IPAM may be rusticated in Sierra Leone

The Institute of Public Administration and Management (IPAM) is set to decide the fate of 128 students who were allegedly involved in examination malpractice. According to the Head of the Disciplinary Committee at the college, Dr Ezekiel Duramani Lakkoh, investigations will be concluded later this week.

Denying your partner sex could land you in jail

Married people (men and women) who deny their partners sex, can be jailed for up to two years for causing “emotional abuse”, the police in Ghana have warned, citing an existing law in force since 2007.

The Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit (DOVVSU) of the Ghana Police also imposes an optional fine of 500 penalty units, which is equivalent to GH¢6,000 (Le10million). It also provides that people found guilty of the offence can face both fines and jail term.

Orange launches three projects in fulfillment of FQE pledge

The telecommunication giant Orange SL has launched three educational projects as part of efforts to fulfill a pledge made towards the government’s Free Quality Education (FQE) program.

The projects include the introduction of coding in schools, supply of free hygiene pads to female pupils and sponsorship of inter-secondary school coding competition.

Sierra Leone sends soldiers to protect judges investigating former president’s administration

The National Security Coordinator, Brig (Rtd) Jah Tucker says the Military Aid to Civil Power (MAC-P) has been invoked to cover the residence of each of the three judges presiding over the three commissions of inquiry (COI) investigating corrupt former government officials. 

Tucker, who heads the Office of National Security (ONS), told Politico that the strand of Mac-P invoked was the “standing” one and not the “emergency” one. 

Riots, as Gambian police “kill” Sierra Leone national

There were riots in various parts of The Gambia on Wednesday, concentrated around the Senegambia area, following the death of a Sierra Leonean.

It led to the torching of the residence of the head of the police Anti-Crime Unit, Gorgi Mboob.

The protesters, in their hundreds and mostly Gambian, accuse the police of beating to death, Usman Dabor, a Sierra Leonean married to a Gambian wife. His body is lying at the Kanifeng hospital.

Sierra Leone plans to increase water rate by 80%

Guma Valley Water Company is planning to increase water rate for businesses in the capital, Freetown, Politico has learnt.

According to a document released by the Electricity and Water Regulation Commission (EWRC), the proposal by the company will see charges on water rate go up by close to 80% for small businesses.

The proposal which is yet to be approved by EWRC comes in the face of the perennial challenge of water supply in the capital city.
