Man remanded for housebreaking, larceny

Magistrate Isata Sellu-Tucker of the Pademba Road Court No. 2 in Freetown has remanded Foday Koroma in custody, for allegedly breaking into the house of Vitalis Ubawuchi and stealing a bag containing six million Leones (6,000,000) and a mobile phone valued one million five hundred thousand  Leones (1,500,000), all equivalent the old Leone currency. 

Koroma was charged with Housebreaking and Larceny.

The Prosecution, led by Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Hawa Bah, alleged that the accused on Tuesday 26th July 2022 at 74 Farmer Lane, Babadorie, Lumley, Freetown, broke and entered the house of complainant Ubawuchi, a fishing material vendor, and stole the said items. 

In his testimony in court on Monday 22nd August 2022, the complainant said he recognized the accused in the dock and went on to explain how in September 2021, one of his friends came with the accused for him to be working under him.

He said on the 26th July 2022 at around 7 p.m. he returned home only to find out that his Tecno mobile phone together with a memory card and a bag in his wardrobe were missing, adding that everything in his room was scattered.

“Because I was nervous, I decided to go outside and ease myself only to find out that the ceiling was also destroyed,” Ubawuchi stated.

He said he immediately went to his landlady for her to look at the scene. He claimed the landlady said she saw “one boy” prior to the said incident.

Accompanied by the landlady Ubawachi went to the Police. “I told the Police that I suspected Foday (the accused) and they went to his house and arrested him," he stated, adding that the following day they went to search his house. “During the search, they found the phone and memory card," the complainant concluded.  

The accused who was without a defense lawyer told the court that he had no questions for the complainant.

The matter was adjourned to the 27th of August 2022.
