Medical students face disciplinary action over suspected exams malpractice

By Kemo Cham

An unspecified number of students at the College of Medicine and Allied Health Sciences (COMAHS) face disciplinary actions after being fingered for involvement in exams malpractice.

The students who are part of the Premed and Pre-pharmacy program of the College, were allegedly caught on 16 July in the malpractice during a mathematics exam in the just concluded second semester exams.

It is not clear how many studnets are being investigatded and the Public Relations office at the University of Sierra Leone did not respond to a request for comments or clarification when contacted by Politico.

But a leaked communication addressed to some of the students under investigation, which was shared on social media, indicates that there were several fo them. The letter signed by an administrative assistant of the Faculty of Basic Medical Sciences reveals that a committee has been set up by Examinations Malpractice Committee to investigate the matter and proffer recommendations.

COMAHS is one of the three constituent colleges of the University of Sierra Leone (USL) which has been inundated by occurrences of exams malpractice.

Last week the Institute of Public Administration and Management (IPAM) announced the rustication of 21 students who were found wanting for exams malpractice in the academic years 2017/2018. These were the first of two sets under investigations. A decision is expected for the second set  of students suspected of involvement in exams malpractice in the academic year 2018/2019.

Fourah Bay College, the most popular of the three constituent colleges, has also been characteresied by exams malpractice or allegations thereof.
