Sierra Leone’s president to visit Guinea on Monday amid frost in relations

  • President Bio receives the presidential invite from Guinea's foreign minister

President Julius Maada Bio is to visit Guinea on Monday for talks with his opposite number there as part of continued efforts to resolve the disagreements between the two countries.

It follows a visit to Freetown by the Guinean Foreign minister, Ibrahim Khalil Kabba which came after a high powered Sierra Leonean delegation had gone to Guinea and held talks with President Alpha Conde.

Foreign minister Kabba submitted a letter to President Bio in which President Conde invited him to visit.

Information minister Mohamed Rahman Swaray told Politico that the president agreed and would visit next Monday.

A statement from yesterday’s meeting says the two countries are “Concerned that any further deterioration of peace and security between the two countries will not be in the mutual interest of both peoples”.

They agreed to work toward the return of normalcy after the recent tension on the disputed town of Yenga and the closure by Guinea of their two countries’ borders.

They resolved that the two governments do “everything possible to ensure that no further action or omission allows for the exploitation of our common vulnerabilities to create any further instability within and among their two peoples”.

They agreed to resolve their differences within “the shortest possible time”.

They emphasized on the necessity of free move of the peoples of the two countries.
